Yeah, so today we had movie day and there were several kids who came and participated. Ally and I both have strange schedules this week because we have to take ten hours each off work because we have worked overtime with the movie days and also with the benefit from Saturday. Wythe County teens don't forget that we are have a volunteer info meeting on Thursday at five and also that we are having a teen movie night that night as well. That's really all that I have...except Thursday is Support Teen Literature Day and I still have no idea what I'm going to do. If you have any ideas let me know in the comments!!!

BEDA2, Blogging, Budgets, and other "B" words

Okay, actually those are the only "B" words that I'm using...well...except for books...Anyway, onto the blog post. Today is day two of BEDA (Blog Every Day in April) and yesterday I did a teaser instead of really talking about BEDA and Maureen and stuff. So, BEDA is pretty self explanatory, and it was created (thought up by) Maureen Johnson (author of many fabo YA books.) So, during April I will be blogging every day. Saturdays and Sundays won't be exciting because I'm at home and not really working so they will be short and sweet. And that pretty much sums up BEDA!

Now...onto the other "B's"...Budgets and books. Basically the economy sucks. Hard. Right now I am in the middle of a huge budget freeze. Essentially the only thing that I am allowed to buy is program supplies. It sucks. Hard. I cannot buy books. Period. If J.K Rowling published a surprise Book Eight, the readers of Wythe County would be out of luck. So...what does this mean for the library? Basically it means that we really are depending on you, our patrons, right now. We need you to read and comment on this blog. We need you to come in to the library and check out materials. We need you to come to the programs. We need you to volunteer. We need you to be active so that the Board of Directors sees how vital our contribution is to the library itself. Another way that you can help is to donate books. We love book donations. If books that we don't own are donated then we can have the catalogued and put into circulation. If books are donated that we can't use then we give them to our Friends group. The Friends then sell the books at their monthly book sale and the money comes back to us for various things.

So...blog post number two of BEDA is a cry for help!!! We love our job, we love seeing you guys in here. One of my favorite things is introducing teens to the authors I love. So, don't be strangers!!! Support us so that we can continue to support you!!!

Teen Volunteer Information Meeting

Wythe County Teens...I know we were supposed to have a meeting tonight to kick off our new volunteer program and go over information about how the program is going to work. However, we have about 5 inches of snow (at least we do at my house) and the library is closed. Hopefully you all will check the blog (yes, I know, but I can dream right?) and see that the meeting will have to be rescheduled. I haven't actually talked to Ally today so I am not sure when we will be able to have the meeting. Storytime starts next week, but we may be able to have the meeting next Wednesday. When we get the new date scheduled we will post here and in the library. You can call the office if you have questions, or leave comments here.

Events

On January 30, 2009 we are having another Movie Day at the Wythe County Public Library. You guys know that we can't tell you what we are showing unless you actually come into the library (due to our license) but I am going to post our schedule here.

10-11~Kid's movie about a famous street on PBS
11-12:30~Kid's movie based on an elephant made famous by Dr. Seuss
1-2:30~ Kid's family about a chinese bear who knows karate
2:30-4:00~ Family movie based on a series of juvenile books about twin boys, their sister, and the faerie realm
4-5:30~ Teen Movie about a family who travels to the center of the planet.

If you guys have any trouble figuring out what we are playing come in and we will let you know. As always we will have free popcorn, drinks, and snacks. If there are three more snow dates in Wythe County then the date will be rescheduled for February 6, 2009.


Also we have already started planning things for SRP 2009. The YA theme is Express Yourself @ Your Library. It's a pretty cool theme and we have some really cool things planned for you guys. I will post more on SRP later when we have everything finalized.


One other thing we have starting up is our Teen Volunteer Program. We have so many things that you all can do here that are fun and easy. This is a great way for everyone to earn community services hours and look good on college applications in a few years. Some of the tasks we have are assembling crafts, crowd control at SRP (and other) programs, writing book reviews for this blog, shelving books, planning teen programs, helping us run any program for the little kids, and many more. I am also going to do a follow up for this too once we get approval from the board about what all you guys are allowed to do.

So if you guys have any questions comment, email, or come by and see Ally and me. We are here every weekday from 9-6.

Movie Day and other Randomness

Quick reminder...On Friday we are playing Christmas movies for people of all ages at the Wythe County Public Library. School closes early and I know that everyone wants to celebrate Christmas break. So...tell your younger siblings and relatives, tell your parents, and tell your friends. Unlike some other events that are happening in town on Friday and Saturday this is totally FREE!!! We even provide snacks and drinks. Due to the restrictions in our movie license we can't put the movie titles down here, but here is a schedule with some really obvious hints:

1:00-2:00~ A movie about some misfits, an elf who wants to be a dentist, and a foggy Christmas Eve
2:00-2:30~ Bring your Peanuts along to hunt for the perfect Christmas Tree
2:30-4:00~ Join us and Ralphie for a classic (and remember to tell Santa you want a BB gun)
4:00-5:30~ Come see Jessica Biel before she ever knew JT and see JTT (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) before he dropped off the Hollywood radar.

If you guys can't figure out what these movies are you can always come see Ally and me at the library. We are ALWAYS here and we love seeing you guys (not that we are desperate for your company or anything)


Blog posts may be sporadic through the beginning of the year with the holidays and the library being closed several days. But we will be back in January with some excitement (we hope). Hopefully some local teens will be doing book reviews and we will have some more programs going on as well. We are kicking off our volunteer program in January as well. Don't forget about us if you need community service hours or padding for your college applications. There is a large variety of things to do here and it is indoors out of the bad weather. Also, kids are FUN!!!! So come in and fill out a volunteer application and get started today!

Upcoming Events

So...there are a lot of events coming up at WCPL and we would love to see you there. First, I am sure you all know that TWILIGHT premieres on November 21, 2008!!!!!! Ally and I will be at Marquee Cinema on Saturday November 22, 2008. We will be promoting The Bolt and Twilight. There will be tons of free stuff available for everyone who stops at our booth. On December 19th school lets out early. Starting at 1pm that day we will be showing movies at the library until 5:30 pm. There will be free drinks, popcorn, and snacks all day long. Also, in January we are starting a teen volunteer program. Colleges and employers love people who are active in their communities guys. There are tons of things to do here. If you are interested in working with kids one day this is the perfect opportunity for you to get some experience. We will have more information available about our volunteer program once the program is 100% approved. Also beginning in January we will be having regular teen meetings where you all have the chance to tell us what you want. So...if you want your voice heard we are ready to listen, stop by the Wythe County Public Library Monday-Friday from 9-6 to tell us how you feel, to ask questions, or just to find a good book.
